In the digital world we live in today it seems like EVERYTHING is done on a computer.  With all the newest technology like digital photography, mp3 downloads, and home videos, etc., it is critical to have a good habit of backing up your personal data to an external source.  Like any piece of mechanical equipment, computer components do fail and if a problem is severe like a mechanical failure in a hardrive, you could lose data!  Yes, there are ways that data can be recovered from hardrives as result to physical damage, although it is VERY pricey and time consuming.  This process requires you to remove your hardrive and ship it to a company that will disassemble the drive in a clean room environment in order to recover your data. 

Clean rooms are very precise lab environments which have controlled temperatures and humidity levels to ensure that sensitive technology or lab samples are not damaged by the contaminants that are in regular air. In most clean rooms, the walls and ceilings are made of a plastic or polymer. These rooms are ventilated with continually filtered dust-free air and have external light sources.  These special clean rooms cost up to $200,000 to build and the average job for data recovery is between $1,000 and $2,000 dollars.  During the extraction process, the technician will be able to see all of your personal data and back it up to a re-writable media such as a DVD-R.  

From our experience working in the field supporting home clients, we have seen many times when a hardrive becomes unstable and eventually dies.  Some times we are lucky and able to get the data off before it’s kaput. Most times the drive is not accessible and the client has no backup.  Warning signs of a failing drive are; intermittent blue screens, error messages indicating “cyclic redundancy check, loud grinding or clicking sounds, and disk error’s booting up. 

According to clients, it’s not a money issue when replacing a bad drive, it’s the loss of sentimental data like family photos going back several years that is expensive and time consuming to recover.
